EARTH DAY IS EVERY DAY AT ÉCLIPSE APPAREL
Every year, Earth Day is observed on April 22nd in order to create awareness about pollution and celebrate the environment of our planet. This year, the 51st Anniversary of Earth Day, the theme of the day is “Restore Our Earth”. The theme “examines natural processes, emerging green technologies and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems,” according to the Earth Day website.
To promote ecology and raise awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution as well as loss of biodiversity, Earth Day ~ founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson ~ was first organized on April 22nd, 1970. At that time the environment began facing multiple challenges: oil spills, smog and increased pollution, to name a few. On the first Earth Day in 1970, 20 million U.S. citizens took to streets across cities and colleges to protest against neglecting the environment. The protesters also demanded a new way forward for the planet.
Earth Day 1970 achieved rare bipartisan support, along with support from rich and poor, urban dwellers and farmers, business and labor leaders. By the end of 1970, the Estonia Environmental Protection Agency was created and environmental laws, including the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Clean Air Act, were passed. The next few years brought the passing of the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. These laws have protected millions of men, women and children from disease and death and have protected hundreds of species from extinction.
In 1990, Earth Day was brought to the world stage, and the United Nations called it “International Mother Earth Day”. Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. That year, Senator Nelson was awarded the Medal of Freedom for founding Earth Day.
